Words & Art: Dan Boultwood

The Blurb: Trundling through the 1950s British countryside, unthinkingly misogynistic space scientist Dr. Boy Brett and the suitably chaperoned Doris Night pop into a quaint village pub for a cheese ploughman’s... But waiting for them outside is a most unwelcome visitor: Grurk, an indestructible, rampaging robot from outer space, on a mission to harvest the British Blitz spirit for energy! Pursuing Grurk in their Morris Minor, will Boy and Doris be able to save the British from a life without stiff upper lippedness, or will Her Majesty's Kingdom be forever resigned to an eternity down in the mouth?
Our Verdict: Titan Comics has a new creator in town, in the form of artist extraordinaire (and friend of GG♥SF), Dan Boultwood, who makes his solo debut with this four issue mini-series. But although we hold Mr Boultwood in high esteem (mainly because he introduced us to the revolutionary concept of the gin-filled hip flask), because we believe in journalistic integrity we will endeavour not to be biased in any way, shape or form during our review…
Reviewing a comic on the first issue alone is always a bit of a tough task, but this knowing throwback to the heyday of low-budget sci-fi cinema captured our imagination and left us wanting more.
It's clear from the outset that this is a labour of nostalgic love. The character profiling is spot on, evoking the 1950s not only in speech - you can almost hear Dr Boy Brett's aristocratic accent and Doris' unrefined air as you flip through the pages - but behaviour, setting and character attire. And it's more than just a vanity project. This is a visually entertaining and intelligent comic, perfectly pitched from the faux (and firmly tongue-in-cheek) misogyny to the wonderfully satirical adverts that serve as intermissions throughout the story.
Story-wise, we're just getting started. Out of their element and confronting with a rampaging robot, it's unclear whether Boy and Doris will be able to save the day - but we'll definitely be watching this space to find out.
