Who Run The World? X-Men #1 Relaunched

Posted on 04:56 by rajrani
All hail the first ladies of Marvel.

Earlier this month Brian Wood (Mara) and Olivier Coipel (House of M) reintroduced X-Men to Marvel NOW! with an all-female line up including Storm, Rogue, Kitty Pryde, Rachel Grey, Psylocke and Geeky Girl Bimpe's personal favourite, Jubilee.

Sporting an adjective-less title, X-Men #1 sees an old enemy come a'knocking, looking for a safe haven from an ancient evil. It also sees the return of Jubilee with an orphaned baby in tow, and this little cutie looks set to play a major role in Earth's survival.

X-Men #1 is title that doesn't focus on creating a new team (like we have seen with various Marvel NOW! stories), but instead utilises an existing female collective that already have a strong presence in the Marvel universe. It really places emphasis on establishing compelling characters and showcasing the connections between them.

Throughout the story there is consistent teamwork (as well as an amusing display of destruction at the expense of Wolverine's wallet), and not just teamwork in the sense of 'I'll go here and you go there, we'll dig you out of the rubble later,' but a real 'I'm part A and you're part B, and we both have to do this together to get to part C'. These instances really give the book pace, and drive home the fact that while individually these X-Women are capable of extraordinary things, first and foremost they are a team.

As we've seen from his work on Mara (Image Comics), Wood does a great job at breaking down the notions of the masculine and feminine domain. The outside world is now a place where women can thrive, fight fires, and stop two trains from colliding if they wish to (and these ladies do). He has created lead females who are all about getting the job done, and less about eye-candy or supporting a male lead.

Did we mention that it looks great too? Coipel has a very realistic style, not only is the baby too cute, he is also able to make these ladies look both feminine and kick arse. Psylocke is looking particularly awesome. In the train sequence, Coipel gives us a glimpse of what he can do, but also compliments the dialogue perfectly, whereby you feel a sense of tension and narrative progress without there being any real crisis.

We can't forget Mark Morales who provides some awesome colours that really make the pages pop and give each woman her own unique style and identity.

As you can probably tell, we are bowled over by X-Men #1. It is a great piece of work that looks set to re-establish strong female leads in modern mainstream comics. Fingers crossed.

Sneak Peek! All-Female X-Men #1

Posted on 07:02 by rajrani
There have been lots of reasons to get excited about Marvel NOW!, but we must admit we're extremely excited about X-Men in a female solidarity sort of way.

Marvel have released a preview of #1 of Brian Wood and Olivier Coipel's relaunched title, which features an all-female team including Storm, Jubilee, Rogue, Kitty Pryde, Rachel Grey and Psylocke.

"An old enemy shows up at the X-Men's door, seeking asylum from an ancient evil come back to Earth," reads the blurb.

"Meanwhile, Jubilee has come home, and she's brought with her an orphaned baby who might hold the key to the Earth's survival... or its destruction.

"With an imminent alien invasion and an eons-spanning war between brother and sister around the corner, Storm steps up and puts together a team to protect the child and stop a new threat that could destroy all life in the Marvel Universe."

X-Men #1 hits all good comic book stores on May 29.

Jackman To Hang Up His Claws?

Posted on 08:33 by rajrani
When it comes to the big screen, Hugh Jackman has been the most consistent player in the X-Men world.

But his incarnation as Wolverine could be about to come to an end.

The actor has revealed that following this year's The Wolverine, and next year's X-Men: Days of Future Past, he won't be committed to reprise the role of Logan in future projects.

Of course, that's not to say he won't.

The actor told The Hollywood Reporter: "First heard about [X-Men:
Days of Future Past] around October or November [2012]. I was literally finishing The Wolverine and dreaming about lasagne, and about three weeks before the end, they told me. There was no way I was not going to be part of that."

The actor went on to reveal that he still hasn't read a finished screenplay, and has seen only a synopsis of about eight pages.

Jackman's second solo outing as the mutant anti-hero, The Wolverine, is currently in post-production ahead of its July 26 release.

Top 5 ‘Coolest’ Super Heroes

Posted on 08:55 by rajrani
On this wintery, snowy day in London, it got us thinking here at GG HQ about the ‘coolest’ super heroes – i.e: ones that use snow and/or ice as their major weapon in battle / super power.

Below are our top 5:

1. Storm
One of our favourite superheroes of all time, Storm comes out on top in this ranking. First appearing in the Marvel series in 1975, she’s one of the most powerful mutants on Earth and now a long standing member of the X-Men. She can manipulate the weather creating tornadoes, thunderstorms, blizzards and hurricanes, along with the ability to flash freeze objects and create wind tunnels strong enough to elevate herself and others. Born as Ororo Iqadi T'Challa, she is the princess of a tribe in Kenya, descended from a line of witch-priestesses that have natural gifts for sorcery.
We love this quote from her: “I am a woman, a mutant, a thief, an X-Men, a lover, a wife, a queen. I am all these things. I am Storm, and for me, there are no such things as limits".

2. Mr Freeze
Created in 1959 as a super villain in the DC comics, Mr Freeze mainly serves as an enemy of Batman. He is a scientist who discovered a way of cryogenically freezing his terminally ill wife hoping to sustain her until a cure was found. A fight breaks out in the lab he’s working in one night and he becomes engulfed in cryogenic coolants. Consequently he is dependent on sub zero conditions and has to wear a cryogenic suit to keep him alive. He commits crimes in order to fund his research and becomes more and more sadistic as time goes on. We remember him best in Batman & Robin (1997), played by pun loving Arnie, with such quotes as: “Ice to see you”, “chill out” (etc). Brilliant.

3. Iceman
I know, another X-Men, but we couldn’t leave out one of the founding members. Created in 1963, he has the ability to freeze everything around him and can also turn himself into ice. Portrayed by Shawn Ashmore in the X-Men movies, we’re sure that we haven’t seen all of the Ice Man’s capabilities as yet. He is thought to have not reached his full potential. Born as Robert Louis ‘Bobby’ Drake, he first uses his powers by turning a bully into a block of ice after the bully tries to take his date away from him. He ends up in Professor Charles Xavier’s care and becomes a fully fledged member of the X-Men.

4. Jack Frost
Not to be confused with the kid’s movie, or the dodgy ‘thriller’, the Jack Frost that makes the grade here is one of the first creations of Stan Lee in 1941. Jack Frost has the ability to create snow, sleet and ice. Either fashioning sheets of ice into simple structures such as walls etc, or creating snow flurries to disarm his enemies. So far as he can recall he originated in the Arctic with no memory of his past. He later took on the name Blizzard, and in modern Marvel is introduced as an enemy of Iron Man.

5. Sub-Zero
It might seem strange to add in a video game character to this top 5, but we think it’s appropriate given the nature of this ranking. One of the original characters in the video game Mortal Kombat in 1992, Sub-Zero has the ability to generate and control ice. He was called Ninja to begin with, but was changed after a member of the design team watched The Running Man where the first villain that Arnie fought was called subzero (not hyphenated). 1995 saw the movie Mortal Kombat, where Sub-Zero was played by a French martial artist.

Those that didn’t quite make the cut:
Thor
Although we would love to put Thor in all our of top 5 listings, unfortunately he doesn’t quite make this one. He has a strong affinity with the weather (lightning primarily) and his enemies do live on the ice planet (Jötunheim), but Thor has many more powers that would sit above this one.
Superman
Superman creates the Ice Palace as his temple to Krypton on Earth, but this is just too tenuous for our top 5. He can also breathe freezing air to put out fires and can cool objects to sub-zero temperatures, but again he has many more powers to add to the mix so doesn’t make the cut this time.
