Some critics had written off this movie before it even began. Rather than the documentary style novel by Max Brooks it turned into an all out action Hollywood spectacle which left some fans reeling.
So was it up to scratch and did it meet expectations?
An ordinary day erupts into chaos as a lethal virus spreads throughout the world causing humans to turn into zombies and viciously attack each other. The origins of the virus are unknown and a global pandemic ensues. Gerry Lane (Brad Pitt) leaves his family as he leads a desperate search for the source of the virus and a way to stop its relentless spread.

Global scale
Director Marc Forster clearly wanted to show a global pandemic so we are pleased to say that it isn't just set in America! Lane traverses from the US to South Korea to Israel to Wales with stunning CG aerial shots along the way. Zombies scaling walls and chasing down planes in lemming-style proportions illustrates the epic scale of the virus.

Action from start to finish
From the moment the zombies descend it's action all the way. Friendships are formed, families torn apart, armies are overwhelmed and governments collapse. It's a refreshingly fast paced opening sequence that doesn't dwell on sentimental back stories. It's immediately obvious that Lane cherishes his family, it's alluded to the fact that Pitt has some experience in hostile environments, then it's straight into the zombie apocalypse. Having said that there is some light relief towards the end with some laugh out loud moments (whether they were intentional or not is unclear). The pace slows down and the number of people involved in the end game lessen, but it's arguably the stage of the film that is most tense.

Casting
Pitt is the perfect casting as Gerry Lane and at times seems to be the only one who has any sense! He is ably deputised by his wife, Mireille Enos, who also played a strong character in the recent Gangster Squad. There are some noteworthy bit parts by the great and good of hit TV, such as Matthew Fox (Lost), James Badge Dale (The Pacific), David Morse (Treme) and Peter Capaldi (The Thick of It).

Zombies
The zombies are 28 Days Later style - quick and relentless, making for a fast paced movie that never lets up with jumpy, on the edge of your seat, moments throughout. There's no groaning, beat them up with a bat foes here, they're genuinely intimidating!

More to come?
There's so much more that we want to know at the end of this movie, it definitely leaves you wanting more. Pitt has already hinted that the movie has sequel potential stating “We got plenty of material to go on to do a second or third thing if this thing works.” So, here's hoping that people enjoy the first one as much as we did!
World War Z hits UK screens 21 June 2013.
