And this latest 80-second promo is no exception. Featuring Chris Pine quipping, Zachary Quinto's eyebrows and Benedict Cumberbatch brooding quite a lot, it's an actionfest full of explosions, near-death, skintight costumes and, erm… giant sea monsters.
Speaking of Star Trek, a bunch of lucky journos were invited to see a 40 minute preview of the movie last week. Sadly, we weren't among the chosen few, but we have been devouring reports ever since. Here's what other people have said:
**WARNING: Mild spoilers follow. We promise we've done our best to behave ourselves, but those who'd rather remain unsullied probably shouldn't keep reading. And definitely shouldn't click through to read the full reports.**
Radio Times:
"The action sequences we saw are spectacular and gripping, there's plenty of humour and some great performances (with honourable mention going to Zachary Quinto as Spock – and not to Simon Pegg's grating parody of chief engineer Scotty). But the one thing that really stood out based on what we saw today was Benedict Cumberbatch as villain John Harrison… He is, instantly, utterly mesmerising."
SFX:
"Kirk and Spock haven’t become best friends overnight…and Kirk hasn’t developed any form of self-doubt in the time he’s had command of the Enterprise… So much so that we see him in bed with two women. At the same time. And they have tails."
Total Film:
"All in all, we’re left expecting a breathless action ride, with plenty of characterisation amid the carnage."
The Guardian:
"Without giving too much away, there's more packed into the first half-hour of the movie than an entire season of Lost (and more than the suggestion that the island mystery show's creator continues to be a film-maker with a fondness for spectacular set pieces that don't always entirely fit the storyline)."
Digital Spy:
"We can say with some confidence that audiences are going to be very, very happy come May 9. This is thrilling, emotionally rich, genuinely epic stuff, packed with heart and humour alongside the spectacular action set pieces."
Good golly gosh we're excited to see this movie.
Star Trek Into Darkness is released in the UK on May 9, and in the US on May 17.
