There are many choice words we could use to describe Robert Downey Jr’s Iron Man - genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist to list but a few.
Introspective and philosophical would not be two of them. But according to co-star Don Cheadle, this time round we’ll see Stark going on an “existential journey.”
Cheadle, who plays Stark's friend, James "War Machine" Rhodes, said in a recent interview with E! News: "The tone is there's more of an existential journey that Tony's on trying to come to grips with this thing that he created that is creating him, too."
"Who's really in control? And the toll that it takes on his relationships."
What kind of madness is this? Are we likely to encounter a forlorn Tony Stark reciting angsty prose, “to be, or not to be?”, “doth mother know you weareth her drapes?”?
Apparently not.
According to Marvel top exec, Kevin Feige, despite the darker themes, Iron Man 3 “is not a serious movie.”. And Cheadle backs this up, adding in his interview: “And then lot of shit blows up.”
Hurrah! And we should think so too.
As well returning stars RDJ and Cheadle, other actors reprising their roles include Gwyneth Paltrow as Pepper Potts and Paul Bettany voicing the marvellous Jarvis. A new addition to the cast comes in the form of Sir Ken Kingsley as big bad, The Mandarin.
Iron Man 3 hits UK cinemas 26 April. Make sure you book your tickets kids – shit's gonna blow.
