The Blurb: Set against a contemporary backdrop, DmC Devil May Cry depicts a duplicitous world where nothing is ever as it seems and the line between good and evil is constantly blurred. The franchise’s hero Dante bursts into this world wielding the series’ signature mix of sword and gunplay but adds additional weapons, all new powers and a revitalized gameplay system as players navigate the rich, interactive environment. Taking place a few months before DmC Devil May Cry, it reveals the crucial backstory of Dante and his twin brother Vergil; with never-before-told revelations about these iconic game characters!
Our Verdict: If we're completely honest, this probably isn't a title we'd ever grab off the shelf on a shopping spree. Game-inspired anythings tend to have a certain air of 'money-spinning' about them that as consumers we'd prefer to avoid. But as reviewers, GG♥SF are always happy to keep an open mind and give anything a go.
In an extension of Capcom's successful Gothic fantasy title, we see Vergil take the lead as he tries to break his brother Dante out of Hellfire Prison with the help of psychic street kid, Kat.
Though the narrative jumps around a bit, there's plenty of action to keep us entertained, evoking the spirit of Devil May Cry in the way a spin-off should. Recht and Pion's collaboration makes for some lovely visuals, giving us a comic that was a pleasure to look at, if a little confusing to read.
The problem is that, being unfamiliar with that world, reading The Chronicles of Vergil was a bit of a chore. That said, we're not the target audience. Devil May Cry addicts who love to indulge in a bit of graphic storytelling may well love this.
Devil May Cry: The Chronicles of Vergil #1 from Titan Comics hits stores on May 15, 2013 and will be available on the iPad, iPhone, Web, Android and Kindle Fire, exclusively through the comiXology app and comiXology.com.
