New Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters Trailer

Posted on 04:30 by rajrani

So Percy Jackson & The Lightning Thief may not have been everyone's favourite movie of 2010, but we've got to say we're nonetheless intrigued by the sequel - not least because it stars two of our geeky favourites, Nathan Fillion and Anthony Head.

Plus, if the new trailer's anything to go by, there'll be action aplenty as Percy (Logan Lerman), Annabeth (Alexandra Daddario) and Grover (Brandon T Jackson) reunite to hunt for the Golden Fleece and battle their old foe Luke (Jake Abel).

Stanley Tucci, Douglas Smith, Leven Rambin, Missi Pyle, Yvette Nicole Brown and Mary Birdsong also star in the film, which hits cinemas on August 7.

Glenn Close & John C Reilly Rumoured For Guardians Of The Galaxy

Posted on 04:29 by rajrani
Word on the grapevine is that James Gunn has added two more actors to the cast list for his upcoming Marvel adaptation, Guardians of the Galaxy.

Damages star Glenn Close is rumoured to be in talks to play a senior figure in intergalactic police force Nova Corps - a counterpart to S.H.I.E.L.D director Nick Fury, according to Deadline.

Wreck-It Ralph actor John C Reilly, meanwhile, has apparently been offered the role of Rhomann Dey - a character similar to Agent Coulson who will act as a go-between between the alien and human worlds. Hitfix reports that Reilly's character may have a partner and Hugh Laurie, Alan Rickman and Ken Watanabe are all being considered for that part.

Hitfix's Drew McWeeny also reckons that, though Michael Rooker's character Yondu will serve as the movie's big bad, every member of the team will have a personal grudge against Thanos, tying the movie further to Marvel's more Earth-based activities.

Guardians of the Galaxy will be released on August 1, 2014.

The Great Whedon Wants To 'Do' Batman

Posted on 04:27 by rajrani
Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy raised the bar incredibly high when it comes to superhero movies.

But that hasn't deterred Joss Whedon from saying that he'd love to get his hands on the character.

When asked which character he'd most like to 'do' at the Film Society of Lincoln Centre's 'An Evening with Joss Whedon', the writer-director said: "If I could get my hands on absolutely anybody it would be Batman. (audience applause) He's a Marvel character in the DC universe. And if I could 'do' any, probably Thor, because face it, those arms… (laughs)"

Whedon also cautiously spoke about cult favourite Firefly, saying he'd love to revisit the series, but admitting it's unlikely to happen:

"Right now I'm happy to say everybody is working doing good jobs. There's a real fear of 'The Monkey's Paw,' you know? You bring it back to life and it isn't the same. Even if it's GREAT and it isn't the same. I'm dying to get on a ship with those guys again, but I'm also doing yet another goddamn huge ensemble movie ['The Avengers 2']. Why can't I do a movie about just one guy? So right now I can't even access that part of my brain.

"If all the planets align that would be great, but I'm not going to do what I did the first time and move heaven and earth to make it happen."

But one thing he wasn't able to chat about was the current conflict over the cinematic rights to the character Quicksilver.

"That's not something I can really talk about," he told the audience when asked about the controversy, adding: "Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch are going to be in the movie and they're going to be AWESOME."

Joss Whedon's Much Ado About Nothing hits cinemas on 14 June, while The Avengers 2 is penciled for a 1 May, 2015 release.

Jackman Champions X-Men, Avengers Team-Up

Posted on 07:23 by rajrani
Hugh Jackman has revealed he'd love to see one of geekdom's greatest wishes come true.

Speaking to Screen Rant, the actor revealed that he'd love to see Marvel Studios and 20th Century Fox work together to bring us a X-Men and Avengers team-up movie.

We'd love to see it too, Hugh.

"One of the great things about this movie is that a lot of people from Marvel are here and it seems a lot more inclusive than it has been in the past," he said.

"I don't know what's happening behind the scenes, but I think it's fantastic. I actually just asked the other day, I said, 'I don't know what the legal situation is, but why don't these companies come together? Why isn't it possible?'

"Because personally, I would love to mix it up with Robert Downey Jr and Iron Man and kick his ass. It'd be great."

We're sure RDJ would have something to say about that last dig, but oh, wow. Just imagine if Avengers vs. X-Men was brought to life on the big screen. It'd be a tough task, granted, but Joss 'The Great' Whedon could do it - we know he could.

As for the two studios working together, we'll see how negotiations over Quicksilver pan out as conflict over the use of the character in both X-Men: Days of Future Past and Avengers 2 continues. Wouldn't it be lovely if they found a way?

First Look! The Transformers 4 Autobots

Posted on 07:06 by rajrani
Presumably in an effort to get people excited about Transformers 4, Michael Bay has given us a glimpse at Optimus Prime's makeover as well as two new Autobots.

The Autobots' leader will be a "completely upgraded, custom-built Optimus Prime from Western Star", while the newbies include a "classy 1,200-horsepower Bugatti Grand Sport Vitesse" and a "special race-inspired C7 Corvette Stingray, based on Chevrolet's upcoming 2014 production car".

We hate ourselves a little bit for saying it, but they're pretty sexy motors.

In other Transformers news, The Wrap reports that comedian TJ Miller has been added to the cast. He'll play a mechanic mate of Mark Wahlberg's character, joining Jack Reynor, Nicola Peltz, Stanley Tucci, Kelsey Grammer, Sophia Myles and Li Bingbing for the final film in the franchise.

Transformers 4 hits cinemas on June 27, 2014.

Sneak Peek! Death Sentence by Monty Nero & Mike Dowling

Posted on 06:50 by rajrani
This October comes something we're very excited about.

Writer Monty Nero and artist Mike Dowling have come up with a brilliant concept for a comic in Death Sentence. And it's got celebrity fans too - Mark Millar reckons it's the best idea he's seen in years, calling the comic "genuinely original", while Leinil Yu says: "I absolutely love this. Top notch art and scripting encapsulating a brilliant idea."

The darkly comic story sees graphic designer Verity, failing indie guitarist Weasel and roguish media personality Monty given just six months to live after contracting a terrifying new STD, the G+ Virus.

The silver lining? They also have superpowers.

So do they simply sit and wait for their time to come? Or go out in a blaze of glory?

We know what we'd do.

If the trailer isn't enough to get you going, check out the pages below. This one's definitely on our wish list.

Death Sentence #1 from Titan Comics hits stores on October 9, 2013.  The series will also be available to read day and date on the iPad, iPhone, Web, Android and Kindle Fire, exclusively through the comiXology app and comiXology.com.

Sneak Peek! The First Kingdom Volume 1 by Jack Katz

Posted on 05:56 by rajrani
The name Jack Katz is synonymous with many a good thing in Comicdom. Not least his illustrated opus, The First Kingdom, labelled a "masterpiece" by Jim Steranko and "monumental" by Jack Kirby.

And now, the epic tale is finally being collected for the first time.

The first volume, The Birth Of Tundran, sees the survivors of a nuclear armageddon become playthings of resurgent ‘gods’. As civilisations rise and fall, as loves and lives are lost, the future of humanity will be won by uncovering the secrets of the past.

Comprising six volumes in total, each book includes features on the history of the strip, as well as all-new introductions by Katz and his many fans such as Superman creator Jerry Siegel, who says: "Reading The First Kingdom is like seeing captured on paper glimpses of a dream-world depicted by an artists with remarkable creative vision."

High praise indeed.

If this glimpse at the book's beautiful first six pages doesn't convince you to make an investment, we have no idea what will.

First Kingdom Vol 1: The Birth of Tundran hits stores on September 24, 2013. The series will also be available to read day and date on the iPad, iPhone, Web, Android and Kindle Fire, exclusively through the comiXology app and comiXology.com

Zod Scares In New Man Of Steel TV Spot

Posted on 11:34 by rajrani
"No matter how violent, every action I take is for the greater good of my people."

Wow, that Zod is a bit of a monster.

Michael Shannon's villain takes centre stage in the latest Man Of Steel trailer, and it seems he'll go to any lengths to see Krypton rise again - with no regard whatsoever for the humans of Earth.

"He’s not a villain any more than any other general fighting to protect his people," Shannon said recently. "He doesn’t like to just hurt people and steal diamonds; he’s focused on being successful at his job. I think the way Terrence Stamp approached it – and this isn’t any kind of criticism of his performance – there was something kind of detached about it. Pure hatred, rage, whatever … I think this [interpretation] is more ambiguous."

We can't wait to see him face off against Superman in Man Of Steel.

Man of Steel hits cinemas on June 14.

Whedon Talks Avengers 2 Villain & Star Wars

Posted on 11:30 by rajrani
So now we know that Avengers 2 will feature Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver (we're ignoring the X-Men: Days of Future Past confusion, it hurts our heads), attention has turned to who the villain of the piece might be.

Though Thanos seems to be the obvious choice, The Great Whedon has already hinted that he might be too big a big bad for the sequel.

The bad news is that he continues to be vague and mysterious in his latest interview with Empire:

How are you going to avoid the usual sequel pitfalls? Often they become all about the villain at the expense of the stars.

"Yes, that always makes me cranky. I'm very excited about the villain, and have a lot to say about him. But if you watch my shows, the one thing I've never been very good at is guest stars, because I've always been interested in the ensemble. With The Avengers, I'm still most fascinated by them."

[If you're incredibly keen on this sort of thing, you'll have noticed Joss says "him" there, which means the villain is not female. In fact, it's most likely to be male. So that's something to be aware of.]

"The other thing is, you don't try to top it," Whedon adds. "I know I will never make a moment as pleasing in a film as Hulk and Loki. You can't chase that dragon. If you try to do exactly the same thing, the chances you're going to do it better are very slim, and the only reason for me to devote three years to making another Avengers movie is the hope of making a better one."

See what we mean? Knowing Whedon like we do, though, we doubt he'll go for the obvious.

The writer-director also chatted about being a little disappointed about not doing Star Wars: Episode VII, telling the magazine: "There was a moment of rue that I was already committed, I'm not going to lie, because who didn't want to do that as a kid? But I think they got the right guy so just knowing that I'm going to enjoy the film when it comes out is great. I don't even have to do any work. Can J.J. also make Avengers...?"

Hm. We have a feeling that anyone other than The Great Whedon in charge of The Avengers 2 would cause internet uproar.

Avengers 2 is pencilled for a May 1, 2015 release.

Sackhoff To Play Ms Marvel?

Posted on 06:33 by rajrani
A bit of Twitter banter just might mean the meeting of two of the greatest geek things of all time.

Battlestar Galactica actress Katee Sackhoff has said she'd be up for taking on the role of Ms Marvel in The Avengers 2.

And who wouldn't want to see that?

In response to a tweet calling for her to play the part in Joss Whedon's superhero sequel, Sackhoff said: "Hell yes!", retweeting the post to her followers.

But whether Joss Whedon, who was included in the conversation, was paying attention remains to be seen.

Of course, there's always the possibility that the actress could take on the title role in Marvel's proposed movie about the character, which could mark the comic giant's first female-led superhero movie.

The Avengers 2 hits cinemas on May 1, 2015.

Star Trek: Countdown To Darkness - Our Verdict

Posted on 02:00 by rajrani
Words: Story by Roberto Orci and Mike Johnson, script by Mike Johnson
Art: Pencils by David Messina, inks by Marina Castelvetro, colors by Claudia Scarletgothica
Buy It: from Titan for £9.99

The Blurb: This exclusive graphic novel prequel to this summer’s blockbuster Star Trek movie, Star Trek Into Darkness, sees new characters and conflicts threaten Captain Kirk and the crew of the Enterprise, in a story overseen by Star Trekmovie writer/producer, Roberto Orci.

Our Verdict: We were beamed onto cloud nine with the arrival of Star Trek Into Darkness in cinemas, giving us a summer blockbuster of out-of-this-world proportions. So it's always lovely to get a bit of prequel goodness in comic book form.

The story kicks off as the USS Enterprise arrives at the planet Phaedus to survey the development of the intelligent race on the surface. But their simple mission is soon thwarted when a unexpectedly high-tech jamming signal forces Kirk to violate the prime directive and head to the planet to investigate. On arrival, he and Spock discover that Star Fleet has already interfered thanks to the machinations of a well-meaning former Enterprise captain, Robert April.

What follows is an enjoyable romp, as April takes desperate measures to save the natives from self-destruction by way of civil war. It's a nice story, introducing a couple of interesting new characters with plenty of references to the original series and JJ Abrams' subsequent 2009 movie with some pleasing art.

What it doesn't do, however, is give any hints, clues or set-up for Into Darkness, save a single panel cameo from Benedict Cumberbatch's villain, John Harrisson. This, ultimately, is disappointing in a prequel. But on the flip side, we do get a little insight into the mindset of Spock following the destruction of the planet Vulcan - arguably one of the most interesting aspects of the movie.

GG♥SF Verdict: ♥♥♥♥♥ - an entertaining read that fans, in particular, will enjoy.

Star Trek - Countdown to Darkness Movie Prequel (Movie Tie-In Cover) by Mike Johnson & David Messina, 10th May 2013, £9.99, Titan Books.

Sneak Peek! Razorjack by John Higgins

Posted on 06:29 by rajrani
The colourist of Watchmen and Batman: The Killing Joke, John Higgins, brings back his self-published indie title complete with restored art, all-new dialogue and two brand-new stories to boot.

In the hope of introducing the anthology to a new audience, Razorjack has been repackaged, but the story remains the same. Queen of carnage Razorjack rules over an infernal dimension of screaming torment. All that stands in her path is a pair of rogue cops, whose investigation into a series of horrific serial murders uncovers Razorjack’s existence – and risks the end of humanity.

Creator fans have heaped praise upon the collection. Garth Ennis says: "If there's any justice, this new collection should find the audience the story has always deserved." While Warren Ellis adds: "Razorjack is exactly the sort of thing I've been talking about; doing things new is the point. John Higgins is an innovative and driven artist, constantly looking for the next level, constantly expanding his capabilities."

And if that isn't enough to pique your curiosity, take a gander at the trailer and artwork below. It's pretty gorgeous stuff.

Razorjack from Titan Comics hits stores on September 18, 2013.  The collection will also be available to read day and date on the iPad, iPhone, Web, Android and Kindle Fire, exclusively through the comiXology app and comiXology.com.

New Man Of Steel Trailer, Fate Of Your Planet, Is SUPER!

Posted on 04:00 by rajrani
“You are not alone,” begins Michael Shannon’s eerie and sinister sounding voice over. “My name is General Zod. I have journeyed across an ocean of stars to reach you. Your world has sheltered one of my citizens. He will look like you, but he is not one of you.”

Hold on to your pants ladies and gents, a new Man of Steel trailer has been unleashed on mankind and it’s fan-bloody-tastic. Featuring the main protagonists, including Shannon’s General Zod and Henry Cavill’s Superman, we discover Zod’s motivation for tracking down Kal-El.

This film looks so good that we’re not gonna lie, we just had a total geekgasm.

As well as starring Cavill and Shannon, Man of Steel features a who’s who of Hollywood’s great and good including Russell Crowe as Jor-El, Kevin Costner as Jonathan Kent, Laurence Fishburne as Perry White and the awesome Amy Adams as Lois Lane.

Directed by GG♥SF favourite Zack Snyder (Watchmen, 300, Dawn of the Dead), featuring a screen play by superscribe David S. Goyer (The Dark Knight trilogy, Blade trilogy) and produced by Christopher Nolan’s production house, Syncopy, this is the most exciting Superman film to come along in decades.

In short, we’re pumped!

Man of Steel flies in UK and US cinemas 14 June.

Animated “Star Wars Rebels” Gets Green Light

Posted on 12:22 by rajrani
In what we think is good news for fans of the Force, Disney has commissioned Lucasfilm Animations' new television series Star Wars Rebels, which will take place between Episodes III and IV.

According to an official news release, Star War Rebels’ takes place in a time where the Empire is securing its grip on the galaxy and hunting down the last of the Jedi Knights as a fledgling rebellion against the Empire is taking shape.

The cartoon will premiere as a one-hour special on the Disney Channel before morphing into a TV series for Disney XD, with production on the cartoon already in progress.

Earlier in March this year, Lucasfilm Animation announced its successful Star Wars: The Clone Wars series would be winding down after five seasons so it could “pursue a new direction in animated programming”.

Star Wars Rebels will be helmed by some familiar faces including Dave Filoni (Star Wars: Clone Wars) and Greg Weisman (Young Justice, The Spectacular Spider-Man) who will both executive produce. Simon Kinberg (X:Men: First Class, Sherlock Holmes) will write the premiere episode and share exec producer creds alongside Filoni and Kinberg.

Unfortunately for fans desperate for more information, both Disney and Lucasfilm are keeping plot firmly under wraps, stating: “Details about the show are closely guarded secret at this point.” Boo!

Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D Will Be Linked To Marvel Movies

Posted on 11:24 by rajrani
Joss 'The Great' Whedon has confirmed that his new S.H.I.E.L.D. TV series will be closely linked to the Marvel movieverse.

Speaking to TV Fanatic, the writer/director/all-round genius revealed that the upcoming ABC drama could contain hints about future films.

"We're absolutely on top of all the movies," he said. "We never contradict [or] replicate - we will be flowing in between them, maybe occasionally we'll throw something in that foreshadows [or] echoes, but we're very much beholden to the Marvel cinematic universe."

Meanwhile, ABC president Paul Lee has said that Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is "driven by character" and has "relationships at the heart of it".

"Everything has to push character forward, including action," Whedon affirmed. "We don't want 'spectacle' characters, we want... spectacle that addresses character. We always want the two to mix."

Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will air on Tuesdays at 8/7c on ABC this autumn.
